Natural Raises $30M to Build AI Agent Payment Stack, Compliance and Security as Core Selling Points

U.S. fintech startup Natural has closed a $30 million Series A round to build payment infrastructure for AI agents. Its tech architecture emphasizes pre-settlement compliance and identity verification, directly addressing security and regulatory challenges in agent payments.

U.S. fintech startup Natural has announced a $30 million Series A funding round, led by Forerunner’s Kirsten Green. The company focuses on building payment infrastructure for AI agents, aiming to solve compliance and security issues in machine-to-machine (M2M) payment scenarios.

Key Facts

According to its announcement, Natural’s payment stack is purpose-built for AI agents, enabling them to autonomously initiate, authorize, and complete payments without human intervention. The tech architecture comprises three core layers:

  1. Identity & Authorization Layer: Creates a digital identity for each AI agent and binds programmable payment mandates, including per-transaction limits, daily velocity caps, and payee allowlists.
  2. Pre-Settlement Compliance Screening Layer: Automatically scans counterparties against sanctions lists (e.g., OFAC SDN), detects on-chain taint, and performs anti-money laundering (AML) checks before executing the payment instruction.
  3. Settlement Layer: Supports stablecoins (USDC, USDT) and fiat rails, enabling automated clearing and settlement via smart contracts.

Natural says its system is already collaborating with multiple payment service providers (PSPs) and banks, with a beta test expected to begin in Q2 2026. The funding will be used for team expansion and compliance infrastructure development.

Our Take

From OceanAlt’s perspective, Natural’s funding and product design directly target the core pain point of agent payments: pre-settlement compliance and security.

In traditional payments, KYC (Know Your Customer) is designed for human users. But in AI agent scenarios, the payment initiator is an automated program whose behavior may exceed preset boundaries. Natural’s “Identity & Authorization Layer” is essentially a KYA (Know-Your-Agent) mechanism — creating an auditable digital identity for each agent and restricting its payment behavior through programmable mandates. This aligns with OceanAlt’s concept of a “pre-settlement firewall”: verifying the agent’s identity, intent, and permissions before money flows.

Second, its “pre-settlement compliance screening layer” directly addresses regulatory concerns about agent payments. If an agent is maliciously exploited — for instance, injected with fraudulent instructions or used for money laundering — traditional post-hoc tracing often comes too late. By screening against sanctions lists and detecting on-chain taint before a transaction executes, Natural essentially installs a compliance gate on the payment pipeline. This is consistent with OceanAlt’s RAP (Risk-Adjusted Payment) rating methodology: dynamically adjusting payment permissions and screening intensity based on the agent’s risk level.

Notably, Natural supports both stablecoins and fiat currencies, meaning its architecture does not rely on a single settlement network but aims to become a multi-chain compliance layer for agent payments. This could push more PSPs and banks to adopt KYA as a prerequisite for accessing agent payment capabilities.

Closing

Natural’s $30 million raise signals that capital is betting on agent payments moving from “experiment” to “infrastructure” — and that compliance and security, rather than raw transaction speed, will be the decisive variables in whether this track can scale.
