Halborn Unveils AI Agent Financial Threat Model, Putting KYA and Pre-Settlement Interception at the Core

Blockchain security firm Halborn has released a 2026 report, Securing AI Agents in Financial Infrastructure: Threat Models & Controls, systematically mapping the security threats that arise when AI agents are integrated into payment, clearing, and settlement processes. The report warns that once an agent is authorized to spend real funds, the attack surface shifts from traditional account passwords to prompt injection, malicious authorization intent, and fabricated transaction instructions.

Because machine identities cannot directly inherit existing KYC processes, Halborn proposes introducing a Know-Your-Agent (KYA) mechanism to verify an agent's authorization scope, behavioral history, and fund flow paths. The report lays out a control checklist that includes per-transaction and daily cumulative limits, payee whitelists, pre-settlement transaction screening, and non-repudiable audit logs. It also recommends integrating OFAC sanctions list screening and mixer-linking detection into the fund-path validation for agent transactions.

Halborn says these measures apply to scenarios such as stablecoin settlement, cross-border payments, and machine-to-machine payments, and that some payment service providers are already embedding similar rules in internal testing. As AI agents evolve from executing simple tasks to directly managing capital, pre-settlement compliance is shifting from an optional safeguard to a default requirement at the infrastructure layer.
