AIIB Taps Hong Kong Ecosystem to Explore Digital Settlement Systems
The multilateral development bank is assessing tokenized payments for cross-border settlement, with Hong Kong as its first pilot observation window.
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), a multilateral development bank, announced on August 4 that it will explore digital settlement solutions using Hong Kong's financial ecosystem, and plans to expand its financing capacity by establishing a physical office there. According to its disclosure, the bank is studying the application of tokenized payments in cross-border settlement, with a current focus on evaluating Hong Kong's regulatory sandbox, stablecoin arrangements, and multi-currency clearing infrastructure. With more than 100 member economies, AIIB has previously focused primarily on traditional infrastructure financing. This move marks the first time it has explicitly brought digital asset settlement into its business scope. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has in recent years been continuously promoting tokenized deposits and pilot programs for wholesale central bank digital currencies. AIIB's decision to set up in Hong Kong is viewed by the market as recognition by a multilateral institution of Hong Kong's digital finance testbed. As for the specific pilot scope and timeline, the bank has not yet announced details.
