Coinbase: AI Agents Process 205 Million Transactions via x402 Protocol

The crypto exchange reports that machine-to-machine payments using the HTTP 402-based protocol have surged, driven by high-frequency, low-value use cases like data labeling and compute scheduling.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase said Monday that AI agents have processed 205 million transactions via the x402 protocol. x402 is a machine-payment protocol built on the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code, enabling AI agents to initiate and complete micropayments without human intervention. Citing its platform data, Coinbase said the figure reflects activity as of the end of Q1 2026, covering various automated scenarios in its developer ecosystem that have integrated x402.

x402 was developed by Coinbase in collaboration with multiple payment service providers, aiming to offer a standardized machine-to-machine payment channel for AI agents. Unlike traditional API key authorization, x402 embeds payment instructions within HTTP request headers, allowing agents to settle payments synchronously when calling models or data services, with stablecoins such as USDC as the default denomination.

Coinbase attributed the transaction volume growth primarily to high-frequency, low-value use cases such as automated data labeling, content generation, and compute scheduling. The company also emphasized that as agent payments transition to real money flows, pre-settlement authorization intent verification and recipient whitelisting mechanisms are becoming critical compliance components for the protocol's deployment.
