The Swift service provider teams up with Chainlink to offer blockchain-based cross-border settlement to its banking clients, marking one of the largest attempts to bridge the Swift messaging network with public and private blockchains.

Bottomline, a leading provider of Swift services, has partnered with Chainlink to deliver blockchain-based cross-border settlement channels to its network of over 600 banks. According to Bitcoin.com, this represents one of the most extensive efforts to date to connect the Swift messaging network with both public and private blockchains. Bottomline processes over $16 trillion in payments annually, serving more than 600 banks, 1,200 financial institutions, and 10,000 corporations worldwide.

Under the new arrangement, banks can continue to send payment instructions using the ISO 20022 standard, while Chainlink’s technology works in the background to interface these instructions with blockchain settlement. Its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) is responsible for transferring tokenized assets across different blockchain networks, while the Chainlink Runtime Environment coordinates the payment workflows.

Currently, cross-border payment settlements often take several days and can cost more than 5% of the transfer amount, largely due to funds having to pass through multiple intermediary banks. This collaboration aims to bridge that gap without requiring banks to rebuild their core systems. It also extends Chainlink’s expansion strategy, as its Project Pangea has already connected over 50 banks across Europe and South Korea.
