Bank-Issued Stablecoins Enter Africa, Reshaping the Continent's Payment Landscape
African banks are launching fiat-backed stablecoins to bypass traditional correspondent banking, targeting the multi-billion-dollar remittance market with faster, cheaper cross-border payments.

Africa's payment market is witnessing a coordinated entry of bank-issued stablecoins. According to News Ghana, several local banks have launched or are planning to introduce fiat-pegged stablecoins for cross-border remittances and local settlement, aiming to establish more direct fund corridors beyond traditional correspondent banking channels. This move directly targets the continent's multi-billion-dollar annual remittance market, where high fees and multi-day settlement delays have long been pain points.
In markets such as Nigeria and Kenya, central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilots and private stablecoins are developing in parallel, yet regulatory stances remain fragmented. Bank-issued stablecoins offer the advantage of regulatory endorsement and an existing customer base, allowing banks to leverage their licenses for direct access to clearing systems and reduce reliance on third-party payment service providers. However, whether they can compete with established global stablecoin issuers on liquidity and user adoption remains to be seen.
For the broader cross-border payment ecosystem, if bank-issued stablecoins achieve scale, they could accelerate the maturation of machine-to-machine payments and automated settlement scenarios within Africa, while making pre-settlement compliance and authorized-intent verification essential infrastructure components.
