Circle Launches x402 Service Directory: Discover USDC-Enabled Agent Payment Services with a Single API Call
Stablecoin issuer Circle this week announced a new service that allows developers to discover x402 services supporting USDC settlement through a single API call. x402 is a machine payment protocol based on the HTTP 402 status code, designed to enable AI agents to autonomously initiate and receive payments. According to Circle's announcement, the directory will aggregate payment service providers already integrated with x402, allowing developers to query and invoke these services directly without connecting to each one individually. The move is seen as Circle's further push into the agent payment infrastructure space. Previously, Circle launched a smart contract platform and programmable wallets to support developers in building automated payment scenarios. As AI agents gradually gain traction in e-commerce, content subscriptions, and other areas, the demand for standardized discovery and settlement processes in machine-to-machine payments is rising. Circle said the directory will prioritize service providers that have undergone compliance reviews to reduce fraud and regulatory risks in agent payments. The feature is now open for developer testing and supports USDC settlement on major chains including Ethereum and Solana.
