The Cardano network has integrated the x402 payment protocol. Built on the HTTP 402 status code, the protocol is designed to provide native payment capabilities for AI agents and machine-to-machine scenarios. Following the news, the ADA token rose roughly 8% in a single day.
First proposed by Coinbase in May 2025, x402 allows AI agents to complete on-chain payments and settlements without human intervention. Cardano's integration makes it the latest Layer 1 public blockchain to support the standard, following networks such as Base and Solana.
According to Pluang, the Cardano development team has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for merchant onboarding or the range of supported currencies. The x402 ecosystem remains at an early stage, with primary use cases concentrated in pay-per-call APIs, data queries, and micropayments between agents.
