People familiar with the matter said the registry would be used to log AI agents participating in automated transactions, providing a foundation for identity verification and liability attribution in future payment scenarios.
At present, Indian regulators have not disclosed the registry's specific scope, technical standards, or launch timeline. Agentic payments refer to AI agents initiating and completing payments on behalf of users, involving risk control elements such as authorization intent, per-transaction limits, and payee whitelists, which impose new requirements on KYC and KYA (Know Your Agent).
If the registry is implemented, India would become one of the earlier major economies to centrally register entities involved in AI agent payments. The related arrangements remain in early discussion stages, and specific rules are subject to official final announcements.
