Ant Group Launches APASS to Build Trust and Payment Infrastructure for AI Agents
Ant Group has released APASS, a trust infrastructure designed for AI agents, with the goal of enabling AI agents to complete identity verification, authorization, and payment settlement in real commercial scenarios. According to the company, APASS will cover agent identity recognition, transaction authorization, and settlement, attempting to address the trust questions that arise when agents initiate payments: "who is paying, who is being paid, and should this payment be made?"
AI agents are currently moving from conversational tools to autonomous entities capable of executing tasks independently, driving up demand for machine-to-machine payments. Industry protocols such as x402 and MCP have already been exploring standard pathways for agent payments, but compliance judgments regarding agent identity and authorization boundaries still lack unified infrastructure.
Ant Group stated that APASS will first be deployed within its own ecosystem, with plans to open it to external developers and merchants later. This direction is directly related to compliance issues such as KYA (Know-Your-Agent) and pre-settlement interception, though whether it can form a reusable industry standard remains to be seen.
