TRM Labs: Real Demand for x402 Agent Payments Below 10%

Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs has published an on-chain analysis of the x402 protocol, estimating that fewer than 10% of AI agent payment activity reflects genuine commercial demand. x402 is a machine payment protocol built on the HTTP 402 status code, allowing AI agents to complete on-chain settlement without human intervention. It has drawn growing attention in developer communities in recent months.

According to TRM Labs' analysis, a substantial share of current x402 on-chain transactions consists of test calls, wash interactions, or activity driven by airdrop expectations, rather than payments for real goods or services. The report did not disclose absolute figures for transaction counts or values.

This conclusion stands in contrast to recent infrastructure investment around agent payments. Companies including Stripe and Coinbase have moved to build stablecoin settlement rails for AI agents, with the industry broadly viewing machine-to-machine payments as the next growth frontier. TRM Labs' data suggests a clear gap remains between protocol-level activity and genuine payment demand.

For compliance and risk teams, pre-settlement interception, KYA (Know Your Agent), and authorization intent verification in agent payments are currently dealing more with test traffic than with scaled, real money flows.
