Mastercard CFO: Stablecoins and Value-Added Services Drive Growth, AI Agent Commerce Becomes New Battleground
Mastercard's new Chief Financial Officer Ling Hai on September 10 laid out the company's capital allocation strategy in detail for the first time at Goldman Sachs' 2026 Communacopia+ Technology Conference, identifying frontline sales, targeted acquisitions, and infrastructure expansion as its three main priorities. Hai officially assumed the role on August 3.
Hai said Mastercard is positioning itself as a B2B technology provider to adapt to shifts in consumer behavior, cross-border money flows, and emerging technologies such as AI agents. He emphasized that the value of a network credential lies in its ability to cover three types of scenarios simultaneously: offline physical, online, and agentic commerce. "Over the next 10 to 20 years, commerce will remain hybrid," Hai said. "The secret of the network credential is that we can serve across all of these verticals."
Another growth driver comes from the modernization of sovereign payment networks. Hai noted that Mastercard is responding to countries' payment sovereignty needs as an underlying technology provider, offering support for domestic payment networks.
