Crypto Pioneer Warns AI Could Trigger Systemic Banking and Infrastructure Shocks

Adam Back, an early participant in the crypto industry and co-founder of blockchain infrastructure firm Blockstream, said in an interview published by CoinDesk in September 2026 that AI agents' autonomous decision-making in payments and settlement has outpaced the response capacity of traditional banking risk controls, and that the industry "has already lost control of transaction flows." He warned that if AI agents gain large-scale access to stablecoin settlement channels, they could trigger cascading liquidations under extreme market conditions, spilling over into interbank liquidity.

Back pointed out that most current AI agent payment processes lack pre-settlement interception and authorization-intent verification mechanisms. Per-transaction limits and daily cumulative caps are often set by the agents themselves rather than enforced by licensed institutions. He argued that once an agent is hijacked or a model misjudges, funds could complete cross-chain transfers within seconds, and traditional T+1 compliance tracing methods would struggle to cover such activity.

By his estimate, dozens of AI agent payment projects are currently running on testnets or in small-scale production environments, but fewer than 10% have full KYA and anti-money-laundering attribution capabilities. Back called for introducing non-repudiable authorization records at the protocol layer and making pre-settlement compliance checks a default configuration rather than an optional feature.
