BlackRock: AI Agents Could Be Crypto's Next Wave of Demand
BlackRock has suggested in a newly released report that the scaling of AI agents could become the next incremental source of demand for crypto assets. The report argues that once agents begin autonomously executing transactions, invoking services, and completing payments, on-chain settlement and stablecoins will become their natural layer for bookkeeping and clearing.
This assessment aligns with the direction of recent moves in payment infrastructure. Stripe has opened USDC settlement to agent scenarios, and machine payment protocols based on HTTP 402, such as x402, are also advancing. Agent payments are moving from concept to real money flows.
According to Decrypt, BlackRock did not provide a specific timeline or size forecast. For the industry, if agent payments continue to scale, the compliance judgment that precedes settlement—who is paying, to whom, and whether the payment should be made—will shift from optional to a core part of the infrastructure.
