Agentic AI Could Spell the End of Net 30: B2B Payment Terms Shift from Static Contracts to Real-Time Pricing

According to a September 2026 PYMNTS report, agentic AI could render traditional B2B payment terms such as Net 30 and Net 60 obsolete.

The report notes that while enterprises have digitized invoices, automated accounts payable, connected bank accounts via APIs, and built cash flow forecasts, the most critical financial decision between businesses—when money changes hands—is still governed by payment terms negotiated months or even years in advance.

Under an agentic AI framework, buyer and supplier AI agents can negotiate payment timing and discounts in real time. For example, a buyer's AI could calculate whether paying 11 days early is better than holding cash, while a supplier's AI determines the minimum discount required to receive same-day payment. Payment terms thus shift from static contractual clauses to continuously priced working capital decisions.

The report also notes that machine-readable treasury policies, clean data, and hard authorization limits will determine whether AI agents can merely recommend transactions or are granted the authority to execute them directly. In June of this year, JPMorgan already outlined a vision of buyer agents participating in such decisions.
