Anthropic Launches Project Swap to Test Autonomous Trading by AI Agents
Anthropic has unveiled a research initiative called Project Swap, designed to observe how AI agents actually behave once they are given trading permissions. According to the company, the project lets agents autonomously execute asset swaps and make pricing decisions in a controlled environment, in order to assess their performance under real market conditions.
The central question of the experiment is this: when an agent can initiate trades on its own, who constrains the boundaries of its behavior. Anthropic says Project Swap simultaneously records the agent's decision chain and execution results, using them to study authorization scope, spending limits, and the identification of anomalous behavior.
This direction echoes the current compliance debate in the agent payments space. As protocols such as x402 and MCP push machine-to-machine payments toward real-world adoption, the ability to verify intent and attribute actions before settlement is becoming part of the infrastructure itself, rather than a supplement to post-hoc auditing.
