Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is pushing an internal management overhaul: treating the company's internal platforms as products that must "win users," competing with one another like external startups, with AI agents responsible for evaluating performance, routing work to the best options, and bypassing inefficient teams. According to company disclosures, Coinbase currently has about 1,200 full-time AI agents embedded in internal communications and workflows, handling tasks such as code review, design input, strategic assessment, and team collaboration—rather than simple FAQ chatbots.
Armstrong says this integration has already produced quantifiable results: code delivered per developer has roughly doubled year over year, while the number of reported bugs has declined. He further predicts that Coinbase's number of AI agents may eventually exceed its human employees.
Earlier this year, Coinbase began testing AI agents that mimic the styles of former executives to participate in strategic discussions and collaboration. Armstrong views internal competition as an operating principle, with the goal of making the company leaner and faster through deep AI integration.
