Shopify announced this week that its checkout system will be opened to AI agents running in the browser, allowing such agents to complete product selection and payment on behalf of users. According to TechCrunch, the capability targets browser-based automated agent scenarios rather than the API-direct model that has been common until now.
This means agentic payments are moving from backend interfaces into the everyday consumer shopping interface. Agents operating in a browser environment must handle identity verification, payment authorization, and transaction confirmation. For merchants, how to distinguish human users from agent operations at checkout—and ensure that the authorization intent behind every transaction is traceable—has become a new engineering and compliance challenge.
Shopify did not disclose the scale of the first wave of participating merchants or specific partners. The move echoes recent efforts by Stripe, Coinbase, and others in the agentic payments space, as competition over machine-to-machine payment infrastructure extends into the high-frequency arena of e-commerce checkout.
