Survey: 53% of In-House Identity Verification Teams Report KYA-Related Incidents or Losses
A joint study by PYMNTS Intelligence and Trulioo shows that the more identity verification is handled in-house, the higher the share of organizations reporting 'Know Your Agent' (KYA) incidents or losses.

In-House Teams Face Higher KYA Incident Rates
A report jointly released by PYMNTS Intelligence and identity verification provider Trulioo shows that among organizations that handle digital identity verification entirely in-house, 53% reported experiencing incidents or losses related to "Know Your Agent" (KYA). That compares with 28.8% for organizations using a hybrid in-house and external team, and 24.1% for those relying entirely on external service providers.
The study surveyed 350 executives worldwide across corporate compliance, risk management, anti-fraud, underwriting, vendor onboarding, and merchant monitoring.
Bot Traffic Remains a Widespread Challenge
Overall, 89.5% of institutions said managing bot traffic is a challenge, and 52.3% said bot traffic had increased over the past year.
Manual Reviews Drive False Positives and Customer Drop-Off
The report notes that in-house teams rely more heavily on manual review—86.4% use staff review in their verification processes, with an average false positive rate of 3.3%. At the same time, 61.4% of internally managed programs lost customers due to friction in the user registration process, missing business opportunities.
