Mastercard Adds AI Agent Trust Services to Agent Pay

Mastercard announced new trust services for AI agents within its Agent Pay product, designed to verify the identity and authorization scope of agents initiating payments. The move extends the company's push into machine-to-machine payments, following earlier testing of infrastructure around agentic payment scenarios.

According to The Paypers, the new services aim to address a core trust problem in agent payments: when an AI agent initiates a transaction on behalf of a user or business, the recipient needs to confirm that the agent holds valid authorization and is operating within preset limits and whitelists. Mastercard said the capability will be embedded into its existing payment network rather than routed through a separate channel.

As protocols such as x402 and MCP push agent payments from concept toward real money movement, card networks are seeking to extend traditional risk controls and compliance capabilities into automated transaction scenarios. For the industry, building a trust layer for agent payments is shifting from an optional feature to a baseline requirement for network access.
