Synchrony Executive: AI Shopping Agents Stall at the Trust Layer, Payments Infrastructure Remains the Weak Link
AI agents can already recommend products and compare prices, but the missing piece between 'suggestion' and 'spending the consumer's money' is an entire stack of underlying infrastructure—from universal commerce protocols and identity verification to proof of authorized intent and a new trust layer for machine-initiated transactions.

AI Shopping Agents Stall at the Trust Layer
Synchrony Senior Vice President Mike Storiale said in PYMNTS' September "Payments Next" interview series that AI agents can already handle product recommendations and price comparisons, but the gap between "suggestion" and "spending on the consumer's behalf" comes down to a missing set of underlying infrastructure—including universal commerce protocols, identity verification, proof of authorized intent, and a new trust layer designed for machine-initiated transactions.
Storiale noted that current industry discussions mostly focus on connecting AI agents to existing payment methods, while broadly overlooking financing tools such as private-label credit, promotional installments, and buy now, pay later. In his view, financing currently tends to appear at the end of the transaction, whereas agentic commerce is pushing settlement and financing decisions earlier in the process. If the protocol layer cannot be connected end to end, agentic commerce will struggle to reach its next stage.
According to his assessment, what truly determines whether agentic commerce can scale is not how intelligent the agents themselves are, but who can vouch for machine-initiated payments, verify intent, and complete attribution.
