Masayoshi Son Issues Rare AI Safety Warning, Renewing Focus on SoftBank's AI Exposure and Leverage

SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son has publicly expressed concern about AI safety risks, saying such risks need to be taken seriously as machines grow more capable. According to Bloomberg, the long-time tech investor—widely seen as one of the most aggressive AI optimists—has shown a subtle shift in tone.

Son's AI bets have been highly concentrated. SoftBank's cumulative committed investment in OpenAI is expected to reach $65 billion by October 2026, according to disclosures. At SoftBank's annual shareholders meeting on June 24, 2026, he said AI remains in its early stages, pushed back against bubble talk of overvaluation, and moved up his timeline for "superintelligence"—which he defines as "10,000 times smarter than humans"—to within two years.

The market is highly sensitive to safety-related topics. On September 14, 2026, after senior executives at OpenAI and Anthropic expressed caution about safety risks in developing frontier models, SoftBank shares fell more than 13% in a single day, the biggest drop in nearly three months. Meanwhile, SoftBank has raised $11.1 billion this year through junk bond issuance to support its AI push, and borrowing costs are rising.
