White House Taps Clayton as AI Czar, Demands Tech Risk Report Within 120 Days
The White House has instructed its artificial intelligence task force to submit an assessment of AI's technological risks and potential benefits within 120 days. According to a Wall Street Journal report dated October 3, 2026, citing Jay Clayton, the Director of National Intelligence and newly appointed AI affairs lead, President Trump ordered the formation of the panel to ensure the United States maintains its lead in "Super Intelligence" (SI) and prioritizes the interests of the American people.
Clayton will head the "Super Intelligence Force." He stated that "the risk of not leading is high": failing to lead would increase both known and unknown risks from adversaries, while leading would better position the U.S. to address those risks for the American people.
The task force's formation follows a meeting last week between Trump and executives from several leading AI companies. According to the Wall Street Journal, the two sides agreed on a set of technology governance principles at the meeting, including internal controls to track model development, third-party model reviews, and reporting related to safety measures to boards of directors. Trump called these voluntary measures the right approach.
