CFOs Rebuild Approval Controls to Prevent Finance AI Agents from Overstepping Authority

CFOs Rebuild Approval Controls to Prevent Finance AI Agents from Overstepping Authority
Enterprises are connecting AI agents to email, procurement software, ERP systems, bank accounts, and payment infrastructure, granting them real financial authority. According to a PYMNTS report on October 6, 2026, the biggest risk for finance agents is not model hallucination but the permissions themselves: an agent that can read invoices, create vendors, approve purchases, and initiate payments does not need to breach corporate financial controls—the enterprise may have already bypassed those controls in the automation process.
The report states that traditional segregation of duties controls are being compressed into a single attack surface. If an agent can still control subsequent operations after human approval, human approval becomes a mere formality. To address this, CFOs are moving the approval step out of the AI itself and binding authorization to the exact amount, payee, and account, so that the agent cannot tamper with the transaction after approval is granted.
The report cites PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster, speaking at the seventh annual B2B Payments event, who said that every enterprise already has some degree of agent capability, and the question is how deeply it is embedded in the organization. The emerging rule is: no single entity should simultaneously have the authority to request, approve, and execute fund transfers.
