Meta and Sierra Join Forces with Multiple Companies to Build Personal AI Agent Interaction Standard
Meta and Sierra have partnered with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe, Walmart, and others to develop the Personal Agent Protocol, defining how personal AI agents interact with businesses.

Meta and Sierra announced via official blog on October 6, 2026, that they are jointly developing an open standard—the Personal Agent Protocol—with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe, and Walmart to define how personal AI agents interact with businesses. According to Sierra co-founders Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor, the protocol will cover identity verification, allowing consumers to decide what access to grant their personal agents, while businesses can set boundaries for actions agents can perform through their websites, APIs, or their own agents.
Version 0.1 of the protocol and a companion reference implementation are planned for release by the end of October 2026, for developers to adopt directly. In their blog post, Taylor and Bavor stated that businesses decide which capabilities to open up, personal agents gain a consistent way to connect, and consumers can complete tasks faster.
In a simultaneous announcement, Meta said that as personal agents take on more daily tasks, businesses need clear and secure ways to collaborate with them while maintaining trusted experiences. The protocol will be open for implementation by all entities, with no access restrictions.
