HKMA and BNM Deepen Fintech Ties

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) have announced an expansion of their fintech collaboration, with a focus on cross-border stablecoin settlement. The two institutions will explore the use of stablecoins to improve cross-border payment efficiency and examine ways to align their respective regulatory frameworks. The move marks the latest joint effort by the two central banks in the areas of digital currency and cross-border payments.

Scope of Cooperation

According to Fintech News HK, the collaboration will cover distributed ledger technology, cross-border settlement and compliance technology, among other areas. The two sides plan to test the feasibility of stablecoins in trade settlement and remittance scenarios through joint research or pilot projects.

Timeline and Pilot Scale Still Undisclosed

No specific implementation timetable or pilot scale has been announced. Both central banks have previously taken part in the multi-central bank digital currency bridge (mBridge) project, and this bilateral cooperation could provide a new practical example for a regional stablecoin clearing network.
