OCBC and Ant International Launch Tokenised Deposits for Treasury Management

OCBC and Ant International announced the joint launch of a tokenised deposit product aimed at corporate treasury management. According to a joint announcement, the solution maps bank deposits on-chain in token form for inter-company fund transfers and settlement, with the goal of improving cross-border treasury efficiency within a compliant framework.

The key difference between tokenised deposits and stablecoins is that the former are on-chain representations of commercial bank deposits and are subject to the existing bank regulatory framework, while the latter are typically issued by non-bank institutions. This approach has recently drawn interest from multiple banks in the Asia-Pacific region and is seen as a compliant channel for traditional financial institutions to enter on-chain settlement.

The two parties did not disclose a specific launch timetable or the markets the product will cover. Ant International has previously built cross-border payment and treasury management businesses in multiple markets, while OCBC has a relatively extensive network in Southeast Asia.
