Mastercard: Consumer Trust in AI Agents Will Build Transaction by Transaction
Mastercard Chief Digital Officer Pablo Fourez argues that consumers will not grant AI agents unlimited purchasing authority from the start; trust will accumulate as agents repeatedly complete transactions successfully.

Trust Grows with Each Successful Transaction
In an October 2026 interview with PYMNTS, Mastercard Chief Digital Officer Pablo Fourez said consumers will not give AI agents unlimited purchasing authority on day one, but the scope of that authority will expand as agents repeatedly complete transactions successfully. He offered his own experience as an example: the first time he asked an AI agent to buy a plane ticket, he checked the fare, refund and change policies, and seat assignment. If the agent gets it right several times, he will check less often.
Category Matters
Fourez noted that the degree of authorization also depends on the product category. He knows Paul Smith striped socks well, so he is comfortable letting an agent buy them on his behalf. If a weekly grocery order contains items he buys regularly, it too can gradually be handed over to an agent. He expects consumers to go through a gradual adoption process: initially requiring the agent to confirm before executing, then loosening control after a few tries.
Payment Credentials and Merchant Data
According to Fourez, AI can also recommend which payment credential to use based on offers, available credit, and the consumer's financial situation. At the same time, merchants need to expose inventory, pricing, and product information in real time for agents to evaluate. This means agentic payments involve not only the boundaries of authorization but also the coordination of data interfaces on the merchant side.
