HSBC and Ant Digital Test Tokenised Deposits for AI Agent Micropayments

HSBC and Ant Digital are testing the use of tokenised deposits to provide settlement support for micropayments between AI agents. The pilot focuses on small, high-frequency transactions in machine-to-machine (M2M) scenarios, attempting to complete clearing and settlement through the tokenisation of bank deposits.

According to Fintech News HK, the core of the collaboration is to verify whether AI agents can execute automated micropayments via tokenised deposits, rather than relying on traditional stablecoins or on-chain tokens. If this path proves viable, it would mean that deposits within the banking system could be directly embedded into agent payment flows.

The testing is still at an early stage, and specific transaction volumes, the number of participating merchants, and a launch timetable have not been disclosed. HSBC declined to comment further on the pilot details.
