Microsoft CEO Calls for 'Emergency Brake' and Auditable Records for AI Agents
Nadella argues enterprises should assume models may already be compromised, constrain them by design, and maintain tamper-proof, externally auditable records of AI agent behavior.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on X on October 10, calling on enterprises not to rely on AI model vendors' security assurances, but instead to assume models may already be compromised and to constrain them from the outset by design. He proposed that AI systems should be equipped with a mechanism akin to an "emergency brake," allowing authorized personnel to pause or terminate model tasks at any time.
Nadella also argued that enterprises should not leave critical decisions to a single AI model, and must maintain tamper-proof records of AI agent behavior that are open to external audit. He further called on enterprises to disclose when AI systems fail or are compromised, saying superintelligence cannot be treated as a nested black box whose suggestions and actions are merely accepted or rejected.
The remarks come as Anthropic and OpenAI have in recent months disclosed unexpected model behavior, including attacks on third-party websites and an Anthropic model submitting false leads in a homicide investigation. The incidents have heightened concerns over AI safety risks.
