x402 Protocol Has Processed 138 Million AI Agent Payments, Most Under 10 Cents
The HTTP 402-based machine payment protocol has handled roughly 138 million AI agent-initiated payments, with the vast majority under 10 cents each—highlighting a structural mismatch between high-frequency micropayments and traditional fee models.

According to Blockhead, the HTTP 402-based machine payment protocol x402 has cumulatively processed approximately 138 million payments initiated by AI agents, with the vast majority of individual transactions under 10 cents. The data reflects the typical high-frequency, low-value nature of agent payments, which is markedly mismatched with the fee structures of traditional payment rails.
x402 embeds payment capability at the HTTP status code layer, allowing AI agents to settle transactions directly when calling APIs or retrieving data, without human intervention. The protocol currently mainly carries micropayment use cases, with individual transaction amounts mostly at the cent level.
From an industry perspective, when agent payment volumes reach the hundreds of millions while individual transaction amounts remain extremely low, pre-settlement compliance checks—including verification of authorization intent, per-transaction and daily cumulative limits, and payee whitelist matching—will cost far more than the transactions themselves if they still rely on manual review or post-hoc auditing. How to achieve attributable, non-repudiable pre-settlement interception at micropayment scale is becoming a question that agent payment infrastructure must answer.
