Vitalik Unveils 'Paranoid Mode' for AI Agents, Combining zkAPI, Tor, and Local LLMs
The Ethereum co-founder's experimental configuration aims to minimize data exposure when AI agents call external services, pairing zero-knowledge proof APIs with anonymous networking and on-device inference.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has disclosed a "paranoid mode" configuration for his personal AI agent, combining a zero-knowledge proof API (zkAPI), the Tor anonymity network, and a locally run large language model to reduce the agent's data exposure when calling external services. According to his public description, sensitive inference is performed locally in this mode, on-chain or third-party API calls are proven via zkAPI, and network traffic is routed through Tor.
The configuration comes as AI agents and crypto infrastructure converge at an accelerating pace. Most current agent payment and automated trading schemes transmit intent, addresses, and amounts in plaintext to remote services by default, leaving privacy and compliance boundaries unclear. Vitalik's approach does not involve specific payment protocols or stablecoin settlement; its focus is on hardening privacy at the agent runtime level.
By his account, the mode remains an experimental personal configuration, with no performance data or third-party audit results released.
