Polygon Acquires Coinme to Enter the Payments Race

The Layer 2 network moves beyond infrastructure and into customer-facing payments, aiming to capture revenue that previously flowed to intermediaries.

Polygon has completed its acquisition of crypto payments company Coinme, using the deal to enter a payments sector dominated by players such as Visa and Stripe. Polygon CEO Marc Boiron said the transaction will help Polygon own customer relationships directly and keep revenue that previously flowed to payment intermediaries inside its own system.

Coinme has long operated Bitcoin ATMs and cash on/off-ramp services, giving it end-user compliance and settlement capabilities. Polygon previously focused on Layer 2 scaling and on-chain infrastructure; the acquisition means its business focus is shifting forward into the payments layer.

According to Boiron, after the deal closes Polygon will no longer merely provide the underlying network but will participate directly in user touchpoints and revenue distribution within the payment flow. The specific transaction amount and closing timeline were not disclosed.
