Santander Teams Up with Nvidia to Build AI Lab, Cutting Cost per Interaction from €5 to €0.03
Santander's new Model Arena platform uses real banking tasks to benchmark open-weight models, as the bank shifts from large general-purpose models to smaller task-specific ones—slashing serving costs while improving performance.

Santander announced on October 19 a partnership with Nvidia to develop, at its AI lab, solutions for evaluating the capabilities of AI models and agents in banking scenarios. According to the bank's announcement, the lab has built an evaluation platform called "Model Arena" that uses real banking tasks to compare open-weight models, and leverages Nvidia NeMo Customizer to fine-tune models for specific purposes.
Santander says its approach is shifting from large general-purpose models to smaller, specialized models tailored to specific banking tasks. In some experiments, the serving cost per interaction dropped from €5 to about €0.03 while maintaining strong performance; in a customer service pilot, conversation quality improved and costs fell by more than 50%.
The two parties said the collaboration will continue to expand into foundation models, AI agents, fraud and anti-money laundering, real-time decision-making, and simulation technologies such as banking digital twins. Aser Blanco, Nvidia's global head of banking, said banking is one of the most data-intensive industries, and the key metric is shifting toward "cost per unit of intelligence output" rather than model size.
According to prior PYMNTS Intelligence research, 95% of surveyed large financial services institutions have widely deployed or embedded newer AI tools in their data and technology processes, but adoption of AI in API orchestration and integration stands at only 25%; 30% of financial services companies cite data quality and fragmentation as the main obstacle to further AI deployment.
