Mastercard Launches Agent Pay for Machines, Letting AI Agents Buy Digital Services by Usage

Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines on 2026-10-20, a tool aimed at autonomously operating AI agents that purchase digital services. The company said the product is built on the open-source x402 protocol and connects x402 with the trust, security and acceptance reach of the Mastercard network.
Mastercard noted that paid digital services typically require accounts, API keys, prepaid credits or a billing relationship with the provider. That is manageable when an agent uses only one or two services, but when a task requires switching among different services mid-execution and paying only for actual usage, accounts and billing relationships quickly become complicated. The company also listed trust issues: who authorizes an agent to spend, how much it can spend, what it can buy and who the payee is.
According to its release, a demonstration at this week's Cloudflare Connect event will feature a protein bar promotion by marketing agency Hype: Hype assigns a task to an agent and sets a budget; the agent uses Agent Pay for Machines' Discovery Service to find suppliers and generate a proposal for Hype's approval, then completes nine payments involving two independent merchants under a single shared budget, with no separate accounts, API keys or invoices. Mastercard said the agent pays only for actual usage, while Hype retains control.
Chiro Aikat, Mastercard's co-president for the U.S., told PYMNTS last month that the company is working with merchants to implement standards for agent-initiated transactions while keeping consumers in control of decisions.
