Plaid CEO Warns AI Agents Could Bring a 'Terrible Year' for Financial Security

Plaid co-founder and CEO Zach Perret said at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas on October 20, 2026, that as AI moves from analysis to execution, financial services could become a "monetization lever" for AI platforms such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. Card issuance is the first step: platforms can embed cards within their own "harness" and capture interchange fees, with lending products potentially following.
San Francisco-based Plaid connects to about 12,000 institutions, providing account connectivity and data aggregation for apps. Perret said the industry is watching which financial functions remain on banking platforms and which migrate to AI platforms, noting that banks and fintechs are also building their own agentic experiences.
On security, he said his team is "sprinting to use AI against AI fraud" and predicted financial security will go through a "terrible year." The liability and risk of AI agents acting on customers' behalf is one of the hottest topics at this year's conference; Fitch Ratings said the same day that AI-driven business disruption poses a medium risk to banks over the next five years, with banks serving households and small and medium-sized enterprises most exposed.
