Mastercard Integrates x402 and Base On-Chain USDC to Enable Agentic Payments

Mastercard has announced its integration with the x402 machine payment protocol and support for USDC settlement on Coinbase's Base network, targeting automated payment scenarios initiated by AI agents. x402 is a machine payment protocol built on the HTTP 402 status code, allowing agents to complete payment requests and settlement without human intervention.

According to public information, this integration connects Mastercard's card network with on-chain stablecoin settlement, making USDC on Base one of the settlement assets for its agentic payment scenarios. Mastercard has previously made moves in stablecoin settlement and on-chain clearing and settlement; this marks a concrete implementation aimed at machine-to-machine (M2M) payments.

As agentic payments enter real fund flows, pre-settlement compliance checks—including payer identity, recipient whitelists, and per-transaction limit controls—are becoming essential components of this type of infrastructure.
