Nearly Nine in Ten Large Corporates Are Embracing Tokenized Cash

A survey commissioned by DBS and conducted by EY shows that among 422 large-corporate finance leaders surveyed, 88% said they have actually used or are piloting tokenized money, including 24% with scaled deployments, 43% with limited use in some markets, and 21% in pilot or proof-of-concept stages. Respondents are based in 11 markets including the US, China, Germany and the UK, and all have annual revenue above $500 million.

By instrument type, stablecoins lead with a 63% use-or-planned-adoption rate, followed by tokenized deposits at 53% and tokenized money market funds at 52%. Expected benefits center on payment efficiency: 71% said they have seen or expect to see improvements in real-time cross-border payments within two years, 65% gave the same expectation for liquidity management, and 72% expect better traceability.

Barriers to implementation remain. Regulatory uncertainty, security risks and system-integration difficulty were cited as the main obstacles; nearly two-thirds of respondents want banks to provide a single entry point into the tokenized-money ecosystem, and 63% want pilot and integration support. Lim Soon Chong, DBS's head of global transaction services, said fragmentation could create additional complexity and compliance obligations for corporates.

DBS itself launched DBS Token Services in 2024, connecting its permissioned blockchain with payment systems to support round-the-clock settlement and payments executed on preset conditions. Citi said at its May investor day that hundreds of clients move nearly $1 billion a day through Citi Token Services; in September, DBS and Citi used Swift's digital ledger to complete a weekend dollar payment from Singapore to New York using tokenized deposits, with settlement completed in minutes, according to DBS.
