How do I monitor a counterparty crypto address for risk changes over time?
A screening result is a snapshot: an address that is clean today can be frozen by Tether, sanctioned, or reported to a scam database next week. The way to keep watch is a monitoring list that pushes you a message when the status changes. Why one check is not enough
Freezes and sanctions happen on their own schedule. Tether and Circle freeze addresses at law-enforcement request — thousands of addresses have been frozen to date — and national sanctions lists grow weekly. Yesterday's "no risk signals" guarantees nothing about today.
With a long-term payee the danger is not the first payment but the Nth: the address gets flagged mid-relationship, you keep paying out of habit, and the funds end up stuck on chain. Monitoring is insurance for payment N.

Institutional tools and the honest boundary
For full transaction-flow monitoring — every counterparty of every transfer, not just address-status changes — subscription platforms like Chainalysis KYT and TRM are the industry standard. Address-level watching and transaction-level monitoring are two layers: one is light and free to use, the other exhaustive and priced annually.
The usual boundary applies: no alert means no new hit in the lists being watched, never that the address is guaranteed safe. New scams take time to reach any list.
