Booking Holdings Beats Q2 Estimates, Doubles Down on Payments and Fulfillment Infrastructure

Booking Holdings reported its Q2 2026 earnings on August 4: revenue of approximately $7.35 billion, up 8% year over year, above the market expectation of $7.19 billion; total bookings of approximately $51 billion, up 9% year over year, with room nights up 5%. The company maintained its full-year guidance: revenue growth in the high single digits and adjusted earnings growth in the low-to-mid double digits.
On the earnings call, management stressed that generative AI can recommend hotels and plan itineraries, but it cannot independently handle inventory confirmation, cancellation-policy calculations, customer identity verification, and multi-supplier clearing and settlement. This "commerce infrastructure" is where investment is focused. The company said its merchant platform now processes about 73% of total bookings, giving Booking greater control over the economics of settlements, refunds, and multi-leg trip transactions.
Traffic from large language models still accounts for less than 1% of its room nights, but AI is already helping reduce customer-service costs, improve supplier communication, and lower transaction friction. The company is integrating its loyalty program, supplier connections, payments, and AI into a single platform, transitioning from a standalone hotel-booking service to a payment and fulfillment infrastructure that orchestrates the entire travel journey.
