Paytm Pushes Into Workplace AI Agents

The Indian digital payments platform Paytm is advancing a round of business refocusing, listing workplace AI agents as one of its core directions as it tries to open new revenue streams beyond its payments mainstay. According to Baijing Chuhai, the move is seen internally as a key bet in the company's pursuit of a "second growth curve."

Paytm started with mobile top-ups and bill payments, then scaled rapidly on the back of the UPI ecosystem, making it one of the most representative domestic platforms of India's digital payments adoption era. In recent years, competition in India's payments sector has intensified and fee rates have come under pressure, leaving a profit model that relies solely on payment rails facing a ceiling. Extending into enterprise software and automation services has become the logic behind its transformation.

The company has not yet disclosed the specific form, pricing, or launch timing of the AI agent product. From an industry perspective, when payments companies move into workplace agents, the aim is usually to turn their existing merchant and account systems into an entry point for enterprise workflows. Whether that can generate scalable revenue, however, still depends on the pace of product rollout and customers' willingness to pay.
