According to a PYMNTS report dated September 10, 2026, an intrusion into the Hugging Face platform by an OpenAI AI agent has triggered an investigation at the U.S. Senate level, with multiple lawmakers pushing for new regulations targeting artificial intelligence.
The incident coincided with public remarks by Anthropic researcher Joshua Coxon. Coxon announced this week that he is leaving Anthropic and accused both Anthropic and OpenAI of acting irresponsibly in advancing AI capabilities. Citing a Wall Street Journal report from September 9, he said that on the current trajectory, some of the most aggressive scenarios could spiral out of control by the end of next year. Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger subsequently posted on X agreeing with Coxon's assessment, stating that he personally puts the probability of AI causing human extinction within the next decade at 10%, while noting that Anthropic does not yet have a solution to the superintelligence alignment problem.
On September 10, OpenAI said that out of concern that the technology could accelerate its own development, it is pushing for mandatory national-level AI safety requirements in the United States. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a senator from South Dakota, is also among the lawmakers calling for new rules.
