Ethereum Introduces ERC-8004 Token Standard, Giving AI Agents On-Chain Identity

The Ethereum community has recently released the ERC-8004 token standard, designed to provide verifiable on-chain identities for AI agents. The standard allows AI agents to register unique identifiers on the Ethereum network and record their associated authorization scopes and operational histories.

According to a report by Yellow.com, the core of ERC-8004 lies in binding agent identity to on-chain behavior, making transactions initiated by agents traceable and attributable. This provides a foundational data layer for compliance judgments in machine-to-machine payment scenarios.

Currently, when AI agents participate in on-chain settlements, ambiguous identity and unclear authorization boundaries are major risk points. ERC-8004 attempts to standardize identity registration and permission declarations, giving pre-settlement interception and KYA (Know Your Agent) processes a basis to rely on. The standard is still in its early stages, and actual adoption remains to be seen.
