Visa Executive: India's Next Digital Payments Phase Will Move Toward Trusted AI Agentic Commerce

Visa's India and South Asia head, Sandeep Ghosh, said at an Economic Times event that the next phase of India's digital payments will be "trusted AI-led agentic commerce." He noted that India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has built one of the world's largest real-time retail payment networks, providing the underlying conditions for AI agents to initiate and complete transactions.

Ghosh said Visa is working with local card issuers, acquirers and regulators in India to explore embedding identity verification and authorization mechanisms into agentic payment scenarios, ensuring that every transaction initiated by an AI agent can be traced and intercepted. He did not disclose a specific product launch timeline or pilot scale.

The remarks come as global payment networks race to position themselves for machine-to-machine payments. Visa has previously introduced its "Intelligent Commerce" framework for AI agents, allowing agents to complete payments on users' behalf within preset limits and merchant whitelists. The Reserve Bank of India has not yet issued dedicated regulatory guidance on agentic payments.
