OpenAI Recruits External Independent Evaluators to Advance Third-Party Review of Frontier AI Safety

OpenAI announced via its official blog on September 22, 2026, that it is in discussions with multiple independent evaluation organizations to expand the number of third-party evaluators with expertise in frontier AI safety. The company also published its priorities and principles for effective third-party evaluation, stating it will support independent evaluators and promote clearer, internationally common standards through future legislation and private governance initiatives.

The statement came just one day after OpenAI called for U.S.-led development of global frontier AI technology standards. In an article published on September 21, 2026, OpenAI suggested that recursive self-improvement (RSI) could cause humanity to lose control over AI development, and that decisions on whether and how to pursue the technology must be made now.

About a week earlier, Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei also published a long article proposing the inclusion of independent evaluators in AI safety plans. The successive statements from two leading labs on third-party oversight indicate that frontier AI safety governance is transitioning from corporate self-regulation to external review mechanisms.
