Shopify Opens Checkout to AI Agents
On September 28, 2026, Shopify announced that all eligible merchant storefronts now allow browser-based AI agents to complete checkout. According to Gil Greenberg, Checkout Product Manager at Shopify, in a LinkedIn post, agents could previously search for products, browse collections, and add items to cart via WebMCP. Now they can also read, update, and submit the checkout page, and complete payment through Shop Pay with buyer authorization.
Greenberg said Shopify exposes structured commerce APIs through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), enabling agents to discover products, build carts, and check out. UCP is a shared language used by both hosted MCP and WebMCP to accommodate agents running in different environments.
The announcement came a week after Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke said the company had partnered with Meta to enable its Muse agent to shop and check out via Shop Pay across all Shopify stores. On the same day, Shopify also announced on X that Instinct's personal agent can complete shopping and checkout through Shop Pay. Instinct founder Noah Shinn confirmed that users can now handle product discovery, checkout, and order updates within a single conversation.
