Walmart Opens Shopping to AI Agents, With Spending Limits and Approval Rules

Walmart has announced that starting next month it will allow AI agents to place orders on its website on users' behalf, and will set up separate "Agent Profiles" accounts for agents. According to its announcement, by default all agent shopping requires user approval; users can also set a budget cap (for example, under $100) to let agents buy autonomously, and can view agent orders separately from their own and disable agents at any time.
Walmart also listed the terms agents must follow: agents must not perform actions beyond the user's intent, must not change the user's payment method, and may only access the information needed to complete the task; agents that violate the terms will be blocked. The company said its "Agent Gateway," currently in testing, connects AI agents via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), avoiding the obstacles agents encounter when operating in a browser while keeping agents away from users' shopping history and personal information.
This stance contrasts with Amazon, which has blocked Perplexity's shopping agent and Meta's Muse assistant. Walmart said Sam's Club will also support AI agent shopping.
