AI agents are attempting to take over online shopping and bookings, but pushback from retailers and financial institutions is becoming evident. Amazon has sued Perplexity, alleging it ignored requests to stop letting its agent shop on Amazon's site; Amazon subsequently blocked Meta's Muse agent. According to a report by The Verge on October 22, 2026, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said the bank will not allow external agents to access customer accounts, calling it "too risky" for both customers and the company; some users report being unable to use agents to complete bookings on platforms such as Delta and Amtrak.

Even without explicit bans, agent access is unstable. The report notes that Muse was blocked by bot verification on Target's site one day and passed the next; when querying the lowest price for granola bars, it surfaced a product from a grocery chain that does not deliver to that address. Target spokesperson Loni Monroe said whether an agent can successfully access a site may depend on how it performs its task and the site's existing protective mechanisms.

Meta, Google, OpenAI and others have all launched agent shopping tools that in demonstrations can book flights and hotels and compare prices across a vast array of products. But transactions require sellers willing to accept orders, and existing anti-bot systems and platform risk controls are becoming the practical boundary for agent deployment.
