1Password Opens Vault to AI Agents, Keeping Plaintext Passwords Out of Sight

The password manager lets AI agents perform authenticated actions through a controlled interface, while credentials stay encrypted and never enter the agent's context.

Password management company 1Password has announced that it will open its vault capabilities to AI agents, but agents will not see any plaintext passwords during the process. According to the company, agents complete authentication and credential invocation through a controlled interface; the actual passwords always remain within 1Password's encrypted environment, and the system performs login or authorization actions on the agent's behalf.

The core of this design is to separate "the right to use credentials" from "the credentials themselves": AI agents can perform login-required operations on behalf of users, but cannot obtain password strings that could be copied, leaked, or written into context. For the expanding fields of agent payments and automated workflows, credential leakage has long been one of the main obstacles to deployment.

Currently, 1Password has not disclosed a specific launch timeline or coverage for this capability. The industry is watching how, when agents begin logging into accounts and initiating payments on behalf of users, attribution and non-repudiable records of "who authorized this invocation" will become questions that similar products need to answer.
