Alphabet Reports $51.4 Billion in Q3 Capital Expenditure as Pichai Touts AI Agents Across Product Line
Alphabet disclosed in its Q3 2026 earnings report that capital investment for the quarter reached $51.4 billion, with free cash flow at negative $9.1 billion. CEO Sundar Pichai said on the October 28 earnings call that the company will bring AI agent capabilities previously developed mainly for enterprise customers to consumers, starting with roughly 1 billion users on the Gemini app, capable of handling tasks such as bookings, form filling and scheduling.
Pichai said the agents will serve as a "unified layer" spanning Search, Gemini, Chrome, Android and Workspace. Commerce chief Philipp Schindler said the rollout relies on the Universal Commerce Protocol, which already supports direct checkout with hundreds of thousands of brands including Chewy, Nike and Tapestry, and is combined with the Agent Payments Protocol. The direction falls into two categories: letting agents act on behalf of consumers, and tools that give users control.
Universal Cart and Agentic Commerce Partnerships
This quarter Google also launched Universal Cart to help retailers retain customer relationships and reduce abandoned purchases; an expanded partnership with American Express covers agentic commerce across Search and Wallet. Schindler said users still value brand loyalty and service, with agents taking on more of the price comparison and information organization, and Google sees advertising space in the comparison phase. On the enterprise side, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said Gemini Agent can conduct research, write and run code, and automate business processes, with BNP Paribas deploying Gemini Enterprise to more than 65,000 employees.
